Transgender Awareness Week

Every year, between November 13 and 19, people and organizations all over the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week. It is a great time for people to learn about and educate themselves on transgender issues as well as behaviors and policies that further harm the transgender community.

The week is followed by Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20. The Day of Remembrance was founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender advocate, who wanted to honor the memory of Rita Hester. Hester was a transgender woman killed in 1998, and the vigil honored both her and the loss of other transgender lives to violence that year. Transgender Day of Remembrance has continued on since then.

At SLAC, you may have noticed a nod to Trans Awareness Week – our social media icons were updated to the transgender flag colors.
